sono particolarmente lieto di annunciare a tutti voi che il Premio Giovanni Battista Lacchini per il 2010 sarà conferito al Prof. John Gribbin.  Il Premio Lacchini è il più importante premio che ogni anno l’UAI conferisce ad una personalità del mondo dell’Astronomia professionale o amatoriale.  Alla pagina http://www.uai.it/web/guest/associazione/premio_lacchini trovate la storia di questo premio che già dal 1994 è stato conferito a personaggi italiani e internazionali di assoluto prestigio.

John Gribbin ha già confermato la sua partecipazione alla cerimonia di conferimento che si terrà a Napoli presso l’Osservatorio Astronomico di Capodimonte durante il 43° Congresso UAI (23-26 Settembre 2010). 

Di seguito vi riporto la biografia del Prof. Gribbin e l’elenco dei suoi principali libri.  Sono talmente tanti, e molti tradotti nelle principali lingue internazionali, che è davvero stupefacente immaginare una persona così impegnata nella seria divulgazione scientifica. Nelle prossime settimane pubblicheremo sul sito UAI e sulla rivista tutte le informazioni relative al 43° Congresso UAI, organizzato in stretta collaborazione con l’Unione Astrofili Napoletani.  Nel frattempo invito tutti voi a pianificare la vostra presenza al Congresso UAI.  Sarà davvero speciale!

Biografia

John Gribbin è nato nel 1946 a Maidstone, nel Kent (UK).
Ha studiato fisica presso l'Università del Sussex e ha completato un Master in astronomia presso la stessa Università, prima di trasferirsi all'Istituto di astronomia a Cambridge,  a lavorare per il suo dottorato di ricerca. Nel 1970 ha avuto un riconoscimento dalla Gravity Research Foundation per gli studi sulla natura degli oggetti superluminosi.
E’ stato staff writer per la rivista Nature dal 1970 al 1975, membro dell’unità di Science Policy Research dell’Università del Sussex, Physics consultant per la rivista New Scientist per un ventennio dal 1978 al 1998.  E’ membro della Royal Astronomical Society, della Royal Meteorological Society e della Royal Geographical Society.  
La sua lunga carriera di scrittore di Scienza lo ha portato a firmare oltre 100 libri, molti di questi tradotti in una ventina di lingue e distribuiti in tutto il mondo.  Tra i titoli più famosi: «Alla ricerca del gatto di Schrödinger», «Alla Ricerca della doppia elica» e «Alla ricerca del Big Bang». Una biografia Stephen Hawking, scritta in collaborazione con Michael White, che ha avuto uno straordinario successo editoriale rimanendo 12 settimane in vetta alla classifica del Sunday Times' hardback best-seller list, fermato solo da un altro libro di grandissimo successo dal titolo «Una breve storia del tempo».
Ha avuto molti riconoscimenti per le sue tante pubblicazioni.  Già nel 1974, per i suoi scritti sul climate change, ha ricevuto un riconoscimento dall’Association of British Science Writers, e nel 1982 ha ricevuto un premio dal Griffith Observatory di Los Angeles per le sue pubblicazioni relative alle scoperte relative alla contrazione del sole.
Ha anche scritto e presentato varie serie di programmi radiofonici su argomenti scientifici per la BBC (tra cui QUANTUM, per Radio Four), molto ben accolti dalla critica e dal pubblico.  E’ stato consulente per vari documentari televisivi, tra cui una biografia di Stephen Hawking su Channel 4 nel 2001, oltre a contribuire a programmi televisivi per la Open University e Discovery Channel.
Ha inoltre scritto alcuni libri su famosi scienziati del passato tra cui Richard Feynman, Galileo, James Lovelock.
Nel 2000 è stato nominato Fellow dalla Royal Society of Literature e nel 2009 ha ricevuto un premio alla carriera da parte dell’Association of British Science Writers.
E’ autore di alcuni libri di fantascienza (The Sixth Winter, Brother Esau, Double Planet, Father to the Man, Ragnarok).
